The Pocket Guide and a Philosophy of Wellness

phi·los·o·phy noun \fə-ˈlä-s(ə-)fē\ :

: A particular set of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc.

: A set of ideas about how to do something or how to live

: Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.

: A system of thought based on or involving such inquiry.

I ask each Esthetician who applies for a position at our spa “What is your skincare philosophy?” Most, if they did their research on our company, give me a generic answer, a pre-packaged or pre-defined answer () about being organic in their choices or using products that are natural while still providing results. Others, who did not do their research, offer a long explanation of the products they are familiar with and how each guest has different needs. Some may even get into the details about peels and aggressive therapies.  My intention with the question however, is merely to see where they land in the spectrum of wellness. How much have they matured in their decision making process regarding the subject. Is wellness even on their radar? Every once and a while you get an applicant who gets it. Wellness is about the timeless truths; nature’s beauty, healing properties provided in abundance from mother Earth. The idea that what we put in our bodies and on our bodies matters.

The following is my interpretation of our Wellness Philosophy otherwise bundled as the Wheel of Wellness. Providing a haven for likeminded individuals to partake in what Glen Ivy has to offer; a lush environment of native plant and animal life, opportunities to experience healing waters and therapies, enjoyment of remarkable and healthy cuisine and a place for connection or re-connection with loved ones. It’s a place where you’re comfortable being who you are and there are opportunities to experience something new, to engage in activity that promotes a sense of wellbeing.

Wellness is achieved when the above are aligned, intentional, informed and balanced. A decision is made and a lifestyle begins to surround yourself with your new found philosophy. You begin translating this wellness lifestyle in to every aspect of your world. Excitement when you discover a new piece to your wellness puzzle. This is why I am so excited when I see innovative ideas from companies like Spa Heroes. Their take on wellness brings the concept to a whole new level with accessible facts designed for the consumer and incorporated in to a convenient Pocket Guide. The Pocket Guide is an ingredient intelligence guide that breaks down the heroes and the villains in our skincare products. It clearly points out what to stay away from when making skincare choices, things that are proven to cause cancer and infertility for example.
