Debbie’s Story

On October 5th, 2016 we had the honor of working with 9 beautiful Breast Cancer survivors. They each wrote about their journey in their own words.

October 22nd, 2009 was the day that changed my life. I had done a biopsy on the 20th and the doctor had just called to tell me the results.  “You have breast cancer. Not sure what type but you are a stage 2 or 3 and it’s aggressive.” “How can this be? I go to all my annual appointments?” I had just been in for my annual pap and breast exam in August and there was nothing.

In September I noticed a big lump on my right breast. I really didn’t think much of it.  My PA was on vacation so I scheduled my appointment for when she came back. No rush, it’s nothing.  When I finally got in, she checked me and said, “It’s probably not cancer but I want to make sure.”  I even joked with her how I wanted one on the other side because it made my boob look bigger.  She called Breastlink and from there it all began.  The mammogram hurt like hell. How can you squeeze any harder than what’s already been done to it? Then the ultra sound. They told me to wait for the doctors to go over my results.  Finally, I got called back to the room.  Dr. West’s PA came in and said they needed to do a biopsy and if I could do it that day.  I actually paused and considered how bad traffic would be for the ride home.  I live in Lake Elsinore and was in Orange.  But I didn’t want to drive all the way back so I decided to go ahead and have it done that day.  I got to watch the procedure on the computer.  It was really cool.  He told me he would call me in the next couple of days.  I wasn’t worried.  “Cancer doesn’t happen to me.”

Now here we are.  I called my husband and told him.  He told me it would all be ok.  Next I called my dad.  We prayed together and he said that I will get through this alright.  Next, I told my friend, who drove over right away.  I think she cried more than me.  She kept saying how it wasn’t fair.  I told her it would be ok.  I joked that maybe I would get my new boobs now.  She asked if I was going to work and I said, “why wouldn’t I?  I’m not going to sit around and feel sorry for myself.”  That night, we also had to sit down with our 11-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter and tell them I had cancer.  My daughter took it really hard.  But I assured them that I would be ok.  I also told them that I would always be upfront with them and tell them the truth of what was going to happen.

Not one time did I get mad or asked God, “why me?”  There was a reason why I got it.  That was my thinking.  My husband was pissed.  He didn’t understand why I got it when I go to all my regular doctor’s appointment, had all my check ups and did my mammograms.  I told him, “why not me?”  One in eight women get breast cancer.  I went through my family.  I have 4 sisters, my mom, aunt and cousin.  I went through every one and explained why they couldn’t go through it.  “I am the logical one.  I have a great support system, I don’t have to work, I have great insurance and I can handle it.”  When I explained it that way he saw where I was coming from but was still mad.  I told him things happen for a reason.

One of my friends, who had just finished the process of reconstruction, had invited me to her house to meet other women who had gone through it.  It was supposed to be just Kimbo and Janelle but more people were invited.  They explained what I would be going through and what to expect.  Then they all started talking about their procedures and the boobs all came out.  I don’t think I had ever seen so many boobs out in one place.  It was a little overwhelming but so helpful.  Women supporting each other.  It was so empowering.  And they kept saying “be positive and laugh a lot.”  Something I tell all the women I meet.

November 19 2009, was my first chemo.  I had 16 treatments every 3 weeks.  I was also able to participate in a research program with another chemo medicine.  I was pretty excited on being a part of this research and hopefully helping someone in the future.  Chemo was hard.  I got tired just taking a shower.  But I went to work every day.  I also made sure that the kids got to all their activities.  I didn’t want my kid’s lives to change because of what I was going through.  I made sure my son got to all of his football practices and games and that my daughter got to all her social events.  And that our day-to-day living didn’t really change.  Although looking back, I should have milked it more with my kids.

Exactly 14 days after my first chemo my hair started falling out.  I had promised my daughter that I would let her shave my head.  I was so grossed out in the shower when my hair came out in clumps.  I guess I was expecting it to just all fall out at once.  So that morning I went to work with a hat on.  When my kids came home from school, my friend came over and we had a great time shaving my head.  I let my kids draw on my head and we took pictures.  It was a nice time with my kids.  Being a part of what I was going through was important to the kids. I also wanted them to see that in a bad situation you can still be positive.

I finished chemo in April and had my double mastectomy on May 19, 2010, my son’s 12th birthday.  Poor guy got to spend it in the hospital.  I was ok with getting rid of both of them.  We had done our research and talked to all the doctors.  My plastic surgeon is the one who really convinced me to have them both taken out.  And watching my boobs grow every 4 to 6 weeks was cool.  Finally, in November 2010, I got my implants.  I was finally done!  A year of ups and down and I was finished.  No more cancer!

What an adventure this has been.  Everything I went through, I either learned something new or made a new friend.  All the procedures that I had to have done, I got to watch.  Which I thought was really interesting and cool.  How encouraging and kind all the technicians were.  I had so many amazing friends that helped, my family who were with me, and my husband and kids.  I also got to make new friends who were going through the same thing and I was able to help them.  I wouldn’t change a thing.  I’m glad God gave me this journey to go through.

Summer Planning Guide for the Perfect Trip to Glen Ivy

Summer days at Glen Ivy are the perfect way to escape for the day and soak in the sun. Whether you want to spend a full day experiencing the Hot Springs, or indulge for a few hours at twilight with our new nighttime programming, our team of experts created a “Summer Planning Guide to Glen Ivy!!”

  • Reservations – We recommend pre-booking any Glen Ivy spa experience 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Guests with spa reservations are guaranteed entry.
  • Arrive Early – If you are planning to just come in to take the waters, please arrive early. Our doors open at 8:30AM and have a daily maximum capacity to ensure that our guests enjoy a comfortable and memorable experience.  We recommend arriving at the spa 45 minutes prior to your service to get checked in and stow away your belongings.
  • Printable Guest Map and Guide – We’ve made it easy to plan your day! Go to the Plan Your Day page on our Website, print out our Guest Map and Guide and plan your day around your pre-booked services. Make sure to visit Club Mud first then finish off with the Grotto Body Treatment! We also highly recommend you take advantage of our complimentary daily fitness and wellness classes.  To make the most of your day, be sure to plan ahead!  Please note: Grotto is by appointment only.
  • Twilight Hours – We’re now open until 9PM Thursday through Saturday. Sleep in and come at 4PM for only $35!  Glen Ivy is transformed into a magical place with live entertainment and nighttime programming perfect for spending time on a warm summer night. Be sure to check out the Summer Entertainment Guide.
  • Beach bag- This is a must to carry all of your essentials!
  • Dark colored bathing suit- We recommend wearing dark colors if you wish to experience Club Mud. The all natural red clay is a bright rust color that may stain lighter colored clothing.
  • Sunscreen- If you are planning on relaxing in the lounge pool, you definitely want to protect your skin against the Southern California sun.
  • Lip balm with sunscreen- Lips are often overlooked when it comes to sunscreen, but the truth of the matter is that your lips can get burned as well. Prevent early aging and keep your perfect pout healthy and moisturized with a SPF-infused lip balm.
  • Sunglasses- This is an absolute must to protect your vision and help prevent squinting eyes from the sun.
  • Aloe Vera / After Sun Lotion- A day in the sun can be taxing on your skin so be sure to pack a hydrating lotion to keep it soft and supple.
  • Sandals/flip-flops – Move comfortably from place to place with your favorite pair of sandals.
  • Water bottle- We have several spa water stations, but we recommend bringing your own reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. Staying hydrated is especially important if you’re planning to enjoy any of our spa treatments or even soaking in the warm pools. Just like exercising, the warm water will cause the same affect – increased blood circulation and heart rate…so drink plenty of water.
  • Cash or a Credit Card – It’s always best to have a few dollars on hand just in case or you can place a card on file for convenient purchasing throughout the day.
  • Mobile Phones and Tablets – We know you want to keep everybody updated about your amazing day at Glen Ivy but remember phones and tablets will not float and are likely to be damaged beyond repair if they fall in the water – just a friendly warning! Additionally, we ask that no phones are taken into spa services to ensure a quiet and calm environment for you and others.
  • Feeling Hungry – Glen Ivy serves breakfast and lunch daily and a selection of seasonal small plates on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening.  To avoid lines, we recommend having breakfast and then enjoying a late lunch.

Don’t worry if you forget something! You can find most of these items in our Spa Lifestyle Store. Plus, with your favorite products from Kai, Luli Fama, and Coola, you can’t go wrong!

Global Wellness Day is June 11th!

Saturday, June 11th is on the international calendar as a day to recognize and celebrate the value of living well and engaging in activities that enhance our health and well-being. After all, what could be more important?

That was the question that inspired GWD founder, Belgin Aksoy, to begin this not-for-profit wellness movement three years ago.

“The fundamental purpose of the day is to make us aware of the value of our lives, even if it’s just for one day of the year, to make us stop and think, to get away from the stress of daily living and our bad habits, and thereby find peace with ourselves.”

Aksoy is also passionate about sharing the message that spas are more than places for pampering and weight loss. We are too! Destinations like Glen Ivy provide unique wellness experiences that invite you to step off the fast track long enough to take a few deep consecutive breaths and reconnect with what feeling good feels like.

With that in mind, let’s celebrate GWD together! We’d love to invite you to head to the hot springs on Saturday, June 11th and take advantage of all the wellness we have to offer. (Check out our activities calendar here.)

There’s good news! You already have all you need to feel your best and live your best life. Your Wellness Compass session reconnects you with the wise, intuitive, and empowered energy of your “well-self.” Once you have that energy, confidence, and power back, setting a positive course for success is easy. Take Back Your Life!

Your wellness and life’s purpose can easily become lost or buried under the myriad roles you play in your life; wife, partner, mom, daughter, friend, employee. Perhaps you’ve asked yourself the question, “What happened to me?” or “What’s next on the horizon?” Why not reclaim your wellness with this Take Back Your Life! session? Identify what eats up your precious time and energy, reconnect with what makes you feel happy and well, then head home with a practical feel-good path for living your best life.

Inspired G.O.A.L. Setting

Goals are important! They give life meaning and energy, and make our hopes and dreams come alive. But goals are also scary, overwhelming, and elusive! We set them and too often forget them. Meg’s Inspired G.O.A.L. Setting session uses the empowered energy of your “well-self” to help you get clear about your path and energize your actions for guaranteed success. There’s a lot about traditional goal setting that gets turned upside down in this session. Be prepared!

Glen Ivy Goes Green

In gratitude for the wonderful gift of warm water and for all that the Earth gives us, Glen Ivy strives to be as environmentally conscious as possible.  To spearhead our green efforts is a volunteer group of employees that are passionate about preserving the Earth known as Sustaining Earth’s Environment Daily, or as we affectionately refer to them: S.E.E.D.

As an outdoor spa facility we rely on the environment daily and with the current drought conditions it is more important than ever to use our resources wisely. Here at Glen Ivy we are fortunate to have a committee enthusiastically devoted to these very things.

This Spring the SEED team will been busy managing recycling across the property, planning workshops for employees and volunteering for clean ups and hikes. They’ve also provided easy-to-follow recipes for Homemade Natural Weed Killer and Homemade Bug Spray using essential oils and items found around your home.

cupcakesJoanne-12

To date, S.E.E.D. has made some great changes and accomplishments at Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa.  Here are a few:

  • Implemented a spa-wide recycling program for guests and employees
  • Built 8 birdhouses around the spa to provide homes for Western Bluebirds
  • Eradicated Tamarisk Trees, which endanger the native plants and trees in Coldwater Canyon. This allows native trees and plants to thrive, thereby keeping the animals and insects that live here safe, happy and healthy too.
  • Removed the use of all Styrofoam products throughout the spa
  • Created incentive programs for ridesharing and carpooling
  • Replaced 8 urinals with waterless urinals
  • Installed drinking fountains to reduce plastic cup usage around the spa
  • Using all drain water to water the landscaping and then drain into natural aquifer
  • Consolidated vendors to reduce carbon emissions from delivery trucks

Another “seed” worth noting is that Glen Ivy is a Founding Seed Spa in the Green Spa Network (www.greenspanetwork.org) committed to promoting sustainable best practices in the spa industry.

Greenery2

Being green is a way of life at Glen Ivy. We believe that the preservation of our Earth today will bring healthy benefits for all generations tomorrow. As we are “Nature’s Day Spa”, Glen Ivy is naturally a large consumer of environmental resources, where being earth-friendly is a top priority to us.

Our Green efforts include:

  • Using biodegradable cleaning products
  • Separating recyclables
  • The elimination of Styrofoam cups
  • Reducing the usage of plastic cups and encouraging our guests to reuse their cups
  • Using grey water where possible to irrigate our landscaping
  • Investigating the feasibility of solar electrical generation
  • Switching from conventional incandescent light bulbs to CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulbs
  • Using only natural ingredients in our skin and body products

Glen Ivy is a founding member of the Green Spa Network, an organization dedicated to finding ways to bring sustainable operating practices to the spa industry. You are invited to join us in our efforts – please visit the Green Spa Network’s website at www.greenspanetwork.org for more information on being green.
