It's natural for us people to hide our reactions or dislike of others, out of politeness, while my pets flat out make it clear if they don't like someone's behavior towards them. Even though reacting in like manner when others treat me rudely isn't the most civilized way to act, I wonder whether an honest criticism of another person's rudeness might be better than quietly putting up with their rudeness. Comment on Art of Racing in the Rain, Chapters 49-58 by Susan B. http://www.glenivy.com/2012/02/15/art-of-racing-in-the-rain-chapters-49-58/comment-page-1/#comment-61179 Susan B. I am an avid reader, had glanced through the book once at Borders, but didn't buy it. When you presented it, I was intrigued. I loved the clever language and allusions. Enzo is so real and authentic with his feelings, and the visual images illustrate this so well. I think what I gained most from the book is to be honest with myself and how I feel. We humans have a lot to learn about simply paying attention to what is. I appreciated this phrase in chapter 49. In Enzo's dream, he speaks with a voice synthesizer and affirms "We must root into ourselves and sort out the distortions until that thing which we know in our hearts is perfect and true, stands before us." The comparison with racing becomes especially meaningful for me at the end when Enzo sums up with "A driver must have faith. The driver must accept his fate. Mistakes have been made. Misjudgments. Poor decisions. He must go off-track." Enzo continues that the racer must "... maintain his line and gradually get himself back on the track when it is safe to do so. The race is long." Of course Enzo's devotion to Denny is very touching. His death reminded me of the death of our 19 year old lovebird, Mark Rhett. I knew he was dying the night before. The next morning, my husband found him at the bottom of his cage, took him out of his cage and caressed his chest. One last loud chirp. I was in bed and heard it. Mark Rhett's goodbye. Very sweet. How blessed we were to have him in our lives. First off, Seraphina, thanks so much for choosing this delightful book. We left my dog there while we ate dinner. When we returned to the hotel we were informed that my dog had been screaming and whimpering the entire time from separation anxiety. We were also greeted by a disgruntled guest who threatened to call animal control and tried to start a fight over the incident. Thankfully Jeremy was able to calm him down but I was impressed I found a man willing to fight for my puppy’s honor. …We were married 9 months later. My daughter Brooke 20 years old this month who has prader-willi syndrome and my son who is serving in afghanistan. We are a close family always putting our children first. I can not think of the last memorable valentines day with my husband of 23 years. I guess simply it didn't seem important as something always comes up. But I can say the lifetime of work this far with my family and what love we have shared is all worth it. I learn everyday to count on what I do have and not on what I might get! I would love to step away for a few to share some much needed respite with my husband because he has stood by my side through thick and thin in raising our daughter with special needs. It took five years before I was interested in doing much of anything but going to work and sitting at home. In January 2003, I decided that I wanted to get a group of friends together for Friday Night Happy Hour at a local bar. A group of us met and were having fun. A friend of mine noticed a man at the other end of the bar and told him that all of the fun was at our end of the bar so he joined our group. We all met again for the next three Fridays. My best friend kept telling me that his man liked me and was going to ask me out; I did not believe it for a minute. A week before Valentine's Day 2003, he called and asked me out to dinner on Valentine's Day. I told him that we (I made my best friend and her husband go with us) would love to go. When Greg picked me up for dinner, he arrived with flowers, a mixed CD filled with music he knew I would like-because he had been listening to me, and a homemade Valentine. I knew he was the one for me! We were together from that day on and married in October ( a marvelous night for a moondance) 2003. We celebrate nine years this Valentine's Day. At each location he was sent, I was nowhere to be found. Instead, my sister or best friend was there with a brain teaser for him to solve so he could earn himself a new piece of the treasure map I made and, thus, a clue to his next location. He finally was led to the mall where I was waiting to drive him to the final location – a romantic, champagne-filled gondola ride at sunset. We had many hiccups along the way, including almost running out of gas and actually missing our initial gondola reservation time, but that’s all I can give away in 100 words or less :). I told him to get in the car and I'd drive us to our destination. He later admitted he thought I was taking him to some cheesy restaurant. Imagine his surprise when we pulled up to the hockey arena to watch a Reign hockey game. Valentine's day doesn't have to be fancy or cheesy.. What's important is two people spending time together doing what they love. Nick always tells his friends he knew he had a keeper once I took him to a hockey game and hot wings at Hooters after. 7 Valentine's days down.. 70 more to go!
