Saving CeeCee Honeycut, Chapters 11-15

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman, Glen Ivy Book ClubIn this week’s reading we get to see CeeCee enjoying a little mischief and adventure.  After so many years of living in a state of constant shame, despair, and constant alert I wondered how these new experiences might feel to her.  While the incident with Miz Hobbs was surely scary for CeeCee, she also got to see people reacting to it with a bit of humor.  How different this must have been in comparison with the many incidents with her mother.

We also see the unexpected return of CeeCee’s father in these chapters.  Why do you think he decided to show up unannounced?  CeeCee is not happy to see her father; do you think that she will ever be able to forgive him?  Is he worthy of receiving her forgiveness?

I look forward to reading your thoughts on how CeeCee’s life is changing and unfolding.

Until next week, Happy Reading!

  1. Susan S says:

This was fun. We see CeeCee as a normal kid sharing life with imperfect people. For some reason I like CeeCee’s dad. I don’t see him as a mean or bad character. He is a product of the time when fathers worked and mothers stayed home and took care of the household and kids. CeeCee’s mother was not able to do that, but the dad was not capable of stepping in. I grew up during this time in the Midwest and I believe many of the fathers I knew would have reacted to this situation similarly. They would have shipped their child, especially a girl, off to the nearest female relative. It worked for them. CeeCee had a better life because of it. She is a bright girl. I think someday she would understand.

I agree with Susan about Cee Cee’s dad being a product of his time.I beleive that he does love Cee Cee and did what he thought was best for her by sending her to her Aunt’s house. He was absent from home because of his work so he could provide for his family. Some day, I think that Cee Cee will come to forgive him.

This part of the book is so rich with the lessons that Cee Cee is learning from the new women in her life. I found myself highlighting many lovely phrases from her conversations with Tootie, about finding her “fire”, her thoughts on friendship after having lunch with the two friends in the parking space picnic spot, and the lovely story about the divining stones from Africa.
